Event Details

The Isle of Wight is known for being fiercely independent and has developed a strong sense of identity that often sets it apart from mainland thinking.

This was still true in the Early Middle Ages, when the Wightwara, as they were called at the time, were ruled as an independent kingdom by a king called Arwald. Arwald would be the last King of the Isle of Wight, as his end came in 686AD when Cædwalla, King of Wessex, invaded and captured the Island.

We will be celebrating Arwald (whose actual feast day is the 22nd April) on Friday 24th April, with a spotlight on local beer and cider, a few games of Hneftafl, and some special Arwald’s Day merchandise for purchase!
