Aged 14-25? Want to get informed about the music industry? Brave Island is hosting Soundcheck: A Music Industry Crash Course this Saturday 27th March to tell you everything you need to know.

By Megan Stisted

Our next confirmed talk for  Soundcheck: A Music Industry Crash Course, is An Insight into Independent Record Labels in 2021. Where we are joined by Big Scary Monsters and Alcopop! Records to talk all things record labels. We discuss how labels find their artists, how you can get signed, what being signed means for an artist, and the inner workings of independent record labels in 2021.

Our guest speakers for this event are:

Dave Owen – Label Manager, Big Scary Monsters

Dave is the Label Manager at Big Scary Monsters an independent record label from Oxford.  Now 20 years old and over 300 releases later, as a label they’ve covered everything from punk rock to math rock, emo, indie and a whole lot in between.

Luke Priestley – A&R, Alcopop! Records

Luke is in charge of A&R at Alcopop Records and also runs Cardiff based label Stereo Brain Records – a music business he started aged 19. Starting out promoting and writing reviews Luke has grown his reputation in the industry by developing artists from the ground up, taking local and small artists, growing their fan base and building their careers. In his relatively short career he’s taken bands from 50 cap venues to supporting Flogging Molly at Shepherds Bush, worked with artists like Vukovi & Dreams State in the early stages of their career and has even achieved a Dutch Indie Number 1 with Snow Coats – one of his first signings to Alcopop Records.

This talk will take place on Saturday 27th March, 2pm – 3pm, as a live panel discussion via Zoom.
