In the lead up to the Ventnor International Festival we wanted to bring you a spotlight on some of the acts taking part in what looks set to be an incredible day on Friday 11th August. First up, its the Isle of Wight’s very own CHAMPS

Hello CHAMPS! How would you describe your sound to people who have never heard you before?

Colourful alternative pop.

You’ve just dropped new single ‘The Garden Is Overgrown’ It’s looks like you continuing to develop your sound, what can we expect from album number 3?

We never like to stand still or rest on our laurels. We’re always trying to make the kind of music which we’d like to listen to ourselves and so we’re always trying to push ourselves. We want to make the most interesting songs and sounds we possibly can.

VIF is taking place right on your doorstep, how do you feel about having this event in your hometown?

Lucky! It’s just so incredible that an event of this stature and quality is happening here. We feel honoured to be a part of it and we certainly don’t take it for granted given the calibre of the artists involved.

What’s it like being a creative based in a small town like Ventnor?

It’s probably the only place on the island where it feels like it makes sense to be a creative. It’s a truly inspiring and beautiful town both geographically and topographically. There’s a real sense of vibrancy, individuality and atmosphere here, and as we all know, Ventnor is home to some incredibly interesting people who give the place a real sense of identity. There are a lot of people doing really exciting, brave and original things here and it feels like a real creative community is emerging.

Any top tips for acts on the bill you’d recommend people go and see?

Well I’d genuinely recommend people go and see everyone they can. The quality of the lineup is seriously impressive. We’ve actually played a show with Childhood before and they’re absolutely ace. Dreamy, melodic and very very cool. Watch out for some seriously arresting guitar playing. Also really loving The Parrots at the moment and I’ve heard they put on a serious show.

Can you sum up Ventnor in three words?

Atmospheric, eccentric, steep.

Thanks guys, looking forward to it!

Tickets to see all of the acts playing as part of VIF are £30 available here
